The market today is flooded with swords that are not battle ready swords, and are not intended for actual use. They are described as replicas, ornamental, decorative or as props for movie or theater purposes. Because they are not true functioning swords does not mean that they cannot be beautiful and well-made. Many of them are both, even if they are not suitable for actual use as a fighting sword. Swords in any of these categories are not functioning swords. They are made in various ways, but not with the same quality materials and meticulous construction of real battle ready swords. They can be easily damaged and broken. They were never intended to actually strike anything. Many are made of stainless or other types of steel that is not nearly as strong or flexible as the carbon steel used in a functioning sword. However, even though weight loss they are not intended to be actual weapons they are fairly sharp and can be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. Many people collect swords and use them as a decorative statement or to ornament their home dcor. They make beautiful displays for lighted cabinets and wall art. They are very interesting conversation pieces, especially if the history associated with the replica is known. When used for this purpose the quality of the steel is not really an issue. When they are displayed, they should, of course, never be placed where children may be able to handle them. Swords also make interesting displays for businesses such as restaurants or clubs. The most common use other than home dcor is in the entertainment industry. Some of the current popularity of replicas began with television series and movies, such as the Highlander franchise.
